In God We Rust

When my sister the punk rocking Sunday school teacher asked me what I thought about the recent ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional, I could only answer "Thank God!"

Alas, the pundits are saying that the ruling is likely to be overturned. On what grounds I don't know, but then I was never able to fathom how they got away with "Under God" or "In God We Trust" in the first place, so I'm clearly out of touch.

In truth, despite my heartily jerking knee, I don't think hypocritical and blatantly illegal public deist symbolism is the most pressing issue of the day. Like Binky and many others, as a kid I mumbled whatever I felt like to the Pledge and by high school wasn't saying it at all. Nobody ever made anything of it. I thought the religious element in the Pledge was ridiculous but I was more bothered by the overtly Christian school assemblies our principal made us go to when there was a revival in town.

But that's not why I posted this. I did so because I don't think too many people can link to Tom Tomorrow's words on the subject:

"Can this decision have possibly come at a worse time? Our basic civil liberties are in jeopardy, but we're going to be spending our time as a society arguing about whether or not schoolchildren should be forced to pay tribute to imaginary invisible beings who live in magical kingdoms in outer space somewhere."
Amen, brother. Tom's latest toon isn't too shabby, either.
