Polka-dot lawn

What was already the most colorful house in Austin now has a polka-dot lawn.

Polka-dot lawn

The lawn belongs to the multicolor stucco house with the blue-tile roof at the intersection of West 29th and Glenview, where Bryker Woods starts shading into Pemberton Heights. As the buffalo grass took on its faded fall and winter color, evidently the owner decided it was time to brighten things up a bit.

Knowing that John Erler of the Elk Mating Ritual Hour grew up in Bryker Woods I phoned in to his show this morning. He suggested we call a FlashMob to appear and dance a polka. Purple Haze, anyone?

That's gotta be a bitch to maintain. Very excellent.

Only in Austin!!! It's great. :)

My roommate and I noticed that lawn as we were walking in Bryker Woods the other evening. It was startling, to say the least. The house, though, I adore. I need to walk back by there sometime soon to take a picture of the brilliant blue Spanish roof tiles.

Yes, I love the house, too. She's like a bower bird, she keeps adding more and more ornament to it. It's gorgeous, in my opinion. For the money she's put into it I'm sure she could have six times as much space in the 'burbs, but she'd rather keep Austin weird, and at a prime intersection to show off her creation, too.

That intersection has its non-monetary costs. At times she's had to post a huge "SLOW DOWN!" sign because of crazy drivers and her proximity to MoPac has gotten her burglarized several times. The worst -- I know this because she recited her tale of woe at a neighbohood association meeting -- was the time when she was loading the car to take the kids to the pool, and someone stopped and helped himself to all the swim gear from her trunk in the minute it took her to go into the house and collect the kids. That's a pretty low blow.

The Statesman published a proper photo of owner Beth Thom and her lawn alongside a column by the inimitable John Kelso.

Kelso gave Bryker Woods high praise: "Apparently, the neighbors like it. It's that kind of neighborhood. If this was in Circle C, somebody would give birth to a cow."

Happy Thanksgiving! As a computer novice, I've been searching for just this kind of weird Austin stuff. Very cool! I get a lot of people by to visit my weird Cathedral of Junk. Out of town visitors usually want to know what else there is to see in town so I'm constantly on the lookout for more of Austin's little gems that I can send people on to see. People actually plan their vacations around visiting "roadside attractions". Who knew? Anyway, the Weird Austin site is as good a source of info as I've found. Thanks for doing more to keep Austin weird than putting a bumper sticker on your car. Come visit yourself, if you want. Call 441-6906 some nice day, not when it's raining when everyone always seems to show up.

I loved seeing your lawn on CBS's Sunday Morning. It has inspired me to do an artwork in Photoshop for the class I am taking. Isn't maintenance a problem?

Check out the yard at 709 Gibson (south on First, turn right at El Mercado for two blocks). This is the home studio of artist Faith Schexnayder who makes most of the really outlandish art that sits atop many of the weird buildings in Austin.

The HUGE fish will be gone in a few days but the HUGE chicken will be there for a while.

Also, check out her sculpture just to the right (your right, silly!) of the front door. This is an old iron headboard with a blanket that is formed of chicken wire and concrete, then mosaic'd with broken dishes. Really weird? No, just Austin cool!

Is it simply coincidence that this artist lives at 709? Well, it is South Austin 78704 - where the weird believe that, "We are all here because we are not all there!" Keeping Austin Weird!
