South by South East in our living room

Legendary Austin fiddler Erik Hokkanen, our friend the tabla player Vikram Patil and the vocal duo Soli and Nisha Kapadia jamming at our house.

Click for larger image.

Vikram is an old family friend and a well-known tabla player from Vadodara who has spent years on the road backing up everyone from Ravi Shankar to Gujarati folk singers. He'd been saying for some time that on one of his trips through Texas he wanted to stop in Austin and meet some local musicians. Finally on this year's tour with Soli and Nisha he got the chance. We racked our brains for someone among our limited contacts with big enough ears to meet Vikram on an equal footing. Finally my co-host got up the nerve to approach Erik, who graciously agreed to come over.

It was perfect! They jammed on gypsy scales, Hindi film songs and the Orange Blossom Special, among other things. We were rapt. To add to the "we are not worthy"-ness of the occasion, Malini got to play Faded Love in duet with Erik and I somehow ended up with a guitar in my hands, strumming along with these guys. I still don't believe it.

Ahhh! I am so, so envious. I've never seen Vikram's band, but Erik is amazing. That must have been a priceless moment.

It just goes to show, somewhere in Austin great music is always happening, and unless you're paying attention, you're probably missing it.

Man, that is like having lunch with God, probably better. What a great idea. I could only wish it had been videotaped so I could see it !!!

That would be / have been beautiful to hear here in finland too and erik seemingly gets a chance to jam with many (musicians in festivals) on his tour in finland. unfortunately I have a chance to hear him only in helsinki jazz club Storyville, on 6th of july.
have heard himn in years past.
Actually, does anyone knows his email address (or managers) during this tour, for i would like to invite him to a real 'smoke sauna' built from real tourf? (from swamps)/ turvesavusauna, which is near helsinki center at Töölönlahti, on the Art Park behind Finlandia house!
I read in our million copy helsingin Sanomat about his tour, also, that he likes Indians (american Indians, too and especially their special sauna).
so if anyone can help me in contact, since there is only a week time, send me the gsm # or/and e-address.
and welcome to finland!
ps. I have lived in California for 10yrs...
