Everybody and his dog is doing Johnny Cash tributes right now but the one which sends chills up my spine is Sarah Vowell's on This American Life. Vowell makes the case that the romance of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash was one of mythic proportions. We've all heard "Ring of Fire" but until I heard this report I didn't know that it was written by June Carter, the child star of the Carter Family country music empire, about her love for married speed freak bad boy Cash. That their relationship would (various divorces, incarcerations and detoxes later) bear fruit as 30+ years of happy marriage is even more astounding.
