The condom art of Adriana Bertini

I don't like to reward spammers, but despite discovering her through unsolicited e-mail I have to blog about Brazilian artist Adriana Bertini.

Bertini makes art and fashion from factory-reject condoms. The clothes look very uncomfortable (especially in the climate of Brazil!) and the art isn't particularly polished or subtle, but I have to admire her audacity.

I must be jaded. I don't see this as very audacious. Less so once I looked at her site... it seems like another gimmick. Well, maybe not quite that bad, because she is making use of something that would otherwise end up in a garbage dump.

Non sequitur: Why is it that people who bother to have their sites translated into English don't bother to have them translated by a native English speaker (or someone who understands English grammar)?

I guess it's one way to get a man's attention. I think it might send a message I don't want to be sending. I'm sure that bikini girl has an extra large pack of creepy men following her around.

Her sculptures are too lumpy for me, but I do like some of her lamps. I'd be a little worried about them melting, though.

Christina, it could be because it's so hard to find a native English speaker who understands English grammar.

Sheila, you have a point!

christina [ataraxy cxe jeskey punkto com] • 2003.09.16
And because professional native-speaker translators of English expect to be paid. Generally in dollars or pounds.

(Looking for someone to translate Portuguese to English? Check out my pal Colin Brayton.)

By the way, the main message Bertini says she intends to send is about AIDS prevention. I doubt that these clothes are anything anyone is likely to wear outside of a fashion shoot or art opening.

Prentiss Riddle [riddle cxe io punkto com] • 2003.09.16
Kinda cute, in a weird way. I definitely agree you would probably have your very own pack of weirdoes on your tail should you dare to don one of these.

I didn't say anything about professional translators... I have done a share of cleaning up docs for German friends of mine whose English skills are rusty.

I can just see the pack of weirdos Jenny mentions... "Hey, lady, how much for a few inches off your hemline? The drugstore is closed, and..."

christina [ataraxy cxe jeskey punkto com] • 2003.09.16
LOL @ Christina's "Hey, lady" joke!Hopefully she would mention the fact that they were factory rejects.

Art Pieces Made Out Of Condoms
curatorship

Through the re-using of condoms which do not go through the quality control of the industry, the artist has brought up through the use of visual arts one of the most complex issues of society nowadays, in other words, the importance of the use of condoms, the care with the sexual life. Researshing the sexuality theme, under the point of view of safe sex, she works re-elaborating the preservatives made of latex, dying and handling them in different ways and manners. In the research about the material,
an investigation process comes up. A desire to register life moments or of an era, aiming the result of a route in which the artistically making of it with such remarkable material makes it possible the surfacing of new concepts. The poetic and unusual look of this artist towards the material, which in a way it looks upon with prejudice although it is unquestionably necessary in the present days, is also found among male and female belongines. We realize that its utilization promotes reflection.
Through this research all the artists sensibility emerges as to the issue of social context. Her concern in registering, in voicing, suggesting and aiding all a society through art. It would not be enough to say that the preservative we see is of use. What is before us is like,a matter transformed into a sensual object which its energetic pulse is alive as fire. It is from this transitory body's vitality that Adriana Bertini's work is built. She breaks up with tradition, tabus and offers a place for the public.
They are the joint agent that derives from the homogeneous object's movement with the differential movement of the work accomplished. There is a strong investment expressed in this material, as each piece tends to be eternalized. Adriana Bertini's pieces belong to its circumstances. They show and mark a fact and at the same time promote a rupture between the question of materials usage and the social question. This production reflects and summarizes in its making and presentation the ability to give
form to a plan, of its spontaneity and of its maturity artistical process in which feeling, thought and language all together lead to the creation...

Wow, cool, don't you like it when remote strangers find your posts about them? Prentiss, blogger to the stars.

I could even understand what she said.

christina [ataraxy cxe jeskey punkto com] • 2003.09.30
Hey i was just wondering how you got all the money to make all those cool things out of condoms?

Betty, I didn't make the condom art, Adriana Bettini did. And according to the article she bought factory-reject condoms in bulk.

Which kind of makes you wonder: who else might be buying factory-reject condoms, and what are they doing with them? Not repackaging them and selling them retail, one hopes...

Hi! I had a similar idea about making a dress entirely from condoms for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras held annually in Australia, so I came online to search for 'condom dress' to see if anyone had had the same idea.

I'm very impressed with Adriana's work, and I'm glad I found all this info on what she's done because she's shown me how to avoid the guilt of using potentially life-saving condoms for fun/art/fashion-call it what you will.

This is the URL to the first page I turned up in my search, if anyone's interested:

The idea is to make you think about HIV/AIDS and unprotected sex. I saw these dresses in Bangkok at the International AIDS Conference.

i think this is the most appropriate way to bring into reality the Condom and give it the promince it deserves as we respond to issues of premarital and extra marital sex!

My guess is that most of the people that have posted about Adriana Bertinti's condom clothes have not see it. If I had just read about it and seen the pictures I would of thought it was pretty weird and a gimmick. But I saw it at an art gallery in Chicago and it is very lovely and impressive work. At first you do not even notice that it is made from rubbers. If you get a chance go see it.
