Seurat in Wisconsin, and what about Austin?

Friends of the River in Beloit, Wisconsin, gathered recently to recreate impressionist George Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.

Recreation of a painting by George Seurat

Be sure to see the animation of how they did it.

It would be wonderful if other towns appropriated this idea and recreated paintings that resonate with local landmarks. Austin would need something altogether weirder. With this summer's heat I keep thinking of Dalí's sun-blasted landscapes although Austin doesn't look much like that. I suppose one could half-recreate Le déjeuner sur l'herbe at Barton Springs (or more fully at Hippie Hollow). Any more geographically apt candidates?

I know this isn't exactly what you mean, but A Great Day in Harlem was reinvoked in Atlanta, first elegantly and beautifully in 2003, and then stupidly and embarrassingly in 2005.

Hey, thanks for that tip, Cinque. "A Great Day in Austin" would be a natural but you'd have to hold it in the stadium...

Here in Columbus, our downtown Topiary Garden actually features a full-fledged topiary interpretation of the Suerat classic:

The most commonly seen interpretation must be The Last Supper, Da Vinci.

The Seurat recreated in wisconsin is wonderful.

We interpreted Mr and Mrs Andrews by Thomas Gainsborough seen through the eyes of Cindy Sherman. It took a week of hard work.

Do you know about this?

I might try to paint a local version of the dejeuner scene. Seems like a good idea. Schliefke could sit for the dude in the hat. He does all that crazy arm stretching posing stuff already, that's his thing. He's a natural.
