Rambling 'round Austin

I miss Gaby & Mo's, the lesbian but straight-guy-friendly coffeehouse just across I-35 from UT. It wasn't on my regular path but I always enjoyed its special spot in the slacker universe when I stopped by.

Now the property has been occupied by Sacred Cup, which may or may not have a unique identity the way Gaby & Mo's did. I mean, there is an awful lot of anarchist literature lying around so I guess it could be incubating the next revolution, but that might just be a reflection of the neighborhood it's in. Great cup of coffee in any case. I took a moment for a mirrorshot and a shot of a "hey" graffito apparently connected to the ones I'd seen before on the Drag.

Speaking of anarchists, I just stumbled onto Monkeywrench Books at 110 E. North Loop, on one of Austin's last remaining funky alternativista habitats, the Curve. Ah, it reminds me of the good old days, when I was a greenie pacifist fellow traveller and kept up with fun anarchists like boog "gentle anarchist" highberger and Bob "I've Got a Nietszche Trigger Finger"/"The Abolition of Work" Black. (I wonder what boog and Bob Black are up to these days?) I didn't find much that was all that compelling to me in Monkeywrench's offerings (their used books are sadly overpriced) but the people seemed friendly. As a souvenir I picked up Ted Rall's graphic novel 2024.

And speaking of Austin funk, the mysteriously long-lived but under-patronized Indian grocery store South Asia Bazaar has finally bit the weevil dust and been reincarnated as Austin's most centrally located low-budget Indian restaurant. Various veg and non-veg meals for $3.99 and up (click on the mirrorshot below for a closeup of the menu). Has anyone tried it yet?

I like your local stories a lot. I want to do more of them on my fascinating-terrifying 'hood [the dirty bomber, alleged, is from here] but that would entail leaving my apartment ... hell,it would entail going into the living room and looking out the window, something I have no time for.

Boog is still in River City, with (of all things) a law practice. He is still active in social justice, with humane treatment of prisoners one of his current major foci. I came to know him in the mid-80's, when I gained one of teh Fine Arts seats on the student council running with Boog (who won as SC President that year) on the "And Toto Too" slate. As far as I can remember, his only campaign promise was to dissolve teh Student Council.

Hi Prentiss,

Did you shave your beard? You look hunkish!

Yes, I shaved my beard. As for my looking hunkish... I suppose we've proved that the camera does lie! Alas, what you're seeing in that blurry photo is a few extra pounds of fat, not muscle. I think I'm probably average for my age, but that's not saying much. But thanks for the kind words!

I ate at South Asia Bazaar a few weeks ago. Here's a shocker: they don't have a kitchen. I got up to use the loo, and I walked by our server MICROWAVING our food in little Tupperware containers. I guess they cook the food elsewhere, freeze it, and bring it in. The nan was completely unacceptable: chewy and coated in margarine, as well as microwaved from a frozen state. Ick! And I though Sarovar Express was bad.

Thanks for the warning, Edith. Microwaved in little containers! I suppose it makes sense. The grocery had been running a meal plan for Indian students which I assumed was operated on a carryout basis. The difference between microwaving it yourself in your dorm and having it microwaved for you in the shop isn't all that great. Still, I think I'll stick with Swad and Madras Pavilion.

well, they share a chef with the new airport haven, so the food is not, in fact, cooked on site. we've eaten there twice, both times the server steered us away from the nan...the food is decent and cheap, or maybe our standards are low? (;

Boog is now running for City Commission in Austin's Sister City to the North--Lawrence, Kansas.

He just came in 2nd (out of 11) in the primary and the General is on April 1st!
