$newsid = ''; ?> Give us this day our daily curmudgeonly rant. David Nunez had the misfortune of pushing one of my buttons this morning when he referred to the Weblogger Meetup as a "Central Texas" event.
In general I'm all for inclusiveness, but the shift toward saying "Central Texas" instead of "Austin" gets my goat. Austinites are right to flaunt their pride in Austin and if the suburbanites feel left out, that's a just penalty for living out in sprawl-land.
A while back the bland "Central Texas" phrase apparently became part of the official Austin American-Statesman style, making me wish the pro-developer rag would go all the way and rename itself the Greater Round Rock American-Statesman. Better still, let the Statesman refer to the gated "communities" they're trying to court by the more accurate names "Far West Houston" and "Far South Dallas".
No offense intended to the people in real towns within hollering distance of Austin-- New Braunfels, San Marcos, etc. -- but lumping them into anonymous "Central Texas" isn't doing them any favors, either.
There. Now I can go back to being my usual easygoing self.
