The January, 2002 Harper's published the 1994 diary of Ahmad Omar Sayed Sheikh, the accused murderer of Daniel Pearl, under the title "Diary of a Terrorist". What's amazing to me is that Sheikh, who grew up in London, began his terrorist career as a completely green visitor to India, assigned by his militant bosses to befriend and kidnap foreigners. The story is chilling because of his matter-of-fact tone and how he seemed to have more rapport with his victims than with his comrades, yet felt no compunction against putting them in harm's way. Of course he quickly figured out that his fellow naive backpacker-types were easy prey.
He also appears to have been quite incompetent at covert work. Pity that he learned from his mistakes. (Via Fro:boy.)
