From the July, 2002, issue of Lonely Planet's Comet newsletter:
'We had the horrible experience of losing a seven-year-old for a short period of time in the alleyways of Venice. It was only for a couple of minutes, but we were terrified and it was made worse by the knowledge that the police wouldn't know where to find us when our child showed up on their doorstep. We'd taught the kids what to do in this situation at home, but when we were on the move they just couldn't remember the name of every new hostel or hotel.'From then on, we made sure that the address and phone number of wherever we were staying was written on the kids' shoulder blades with a soft but indelible pen. ... Surprisingly, the kids got a buzz from looking like the tattooed man when we got home from more extended trips and they still had faded 'listings' on their backs. They thought it was a bit like keeping a travel diary!'
